Step 4: Test Processability — and Yes, That Includes Sulfur

In polymer granules, sulfur appears for a completely different reason: it can be a catalyst poison, a source of odor, or a crosslinking concern in certain specialty resins. But in high-performance or metal-catalyzed polymer systems, it's a real specification.

The processability test should not be limited to the datasheet. Put another way: datasheets are marketing documents with numbers. I run a short trial on our actual line, not on a lab rheometer. I also check moisture pickup after controlled exposure. Polymer granules can look dry and still contain enough moisture to cause splay, voids, or viscosity shifts. Use a loss-on-drying analyzer or Karl Fischer titration if moisture is critical.

Step 5: Inspect Packaging and Storage

A polymer granule is a moisture sponge and a contamination magnet. I check the packaging before I sign the receiving report. Is the liner intact? Is the pallet wrapped? Are the labels legible and matching the COA? Are the bags from the same production lot or a mix?

In our climate, a hygroscopic grade left in an unlined bag for three days will change its processing behavior. We've learned to specify lined bags and to reject any torn or opened bag at the dock. That's not being difficult; it's protecting the process.

Storage at your site matters too. If you store polymer granules next to a loading dock with high humidity, you will see quality issues that have nothing to do with the manufacturer.

Step 6: Run a Production-Relevant Trial

The sample plaque in the lab is useful, but it doesn't tell you how the material behaves in your mold, at your cycle time, with your cooling. A production-relevant trial should use the most difficult part you make, not the easiest one.

Before the trial, define acceptance criteria. Is it dimensional stability? Surface gloss? Melt temperature stability? Cycle time? Write them down. If you don't, someone will say 'it looked fine' and another person will say 'it didn't run right' and neither can prove the other wrong.

Step 7: Audit the Quality System, Not Just the Batch
